The Airside 2 Central Cooling Plant project was undertaken in order to provide chilled water for the air conditioning of GOAA’s newest airside terminal building. Landscape design was recognized as a critical component of the project due to the cooling plant’s highly visible location between Airside 2 and the main landside terminal. This site is located along the shore of a small lake and directly adjacent to an elevated tramway carrying thousands of passengers each day. For many, the cooling plant project area will provide a first impression of Central Florida. The landscape plan developed by Borrelli + Partners uses strong masses of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers to enhance views of the cooling plant while complementing the airport grounds. Irrigation designs were carefully developed to assure proper coverage of all areas without conflicting with extensive underground utilities in the project area. As part of this assignment, Borrelli + Partners created rendered plans and elevations for presentation to the airport’s Design Review Committee. Detailed cost estimates, specifications, and construction drawings/details were developed and refined throughout the design process, along with full construction administration services.
